William Alexander Waters Jr., 89, of Hilo, died Feb. 24 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was the district superintendent of Kauai, Windward Oahu and Big Island schools. He was also the state superintendent of education and state Board of Education member.

Private family services were held.
The family requests no flowers or monetary donations.
He is survived by wife, Lillian Waters, of Hilo; sons, William Waters, of San Diego, Calif., Jonah (Jean) Waters, of Hilo; daughter, Kehaulani (Bob) Vogel, of Tacoma, Wash.; brother, Morris Waters, of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
